La Taverna del Mar

A vision of white and blue seafaring proportions, La Taverna del Mar, which La Gavina finally took charge of in 2013, presides majestically over the golden concha of Sant Pol, just a 2-minute stroll down the hill from the hotel. Designed by architect Francesc Folguera, it’s one of the best places to eat in S’Agaró: its natural-light-infused interior features seven distinctive arches which allow diners uninterrupted views of the cerulean-coloured bay while they feast upon mouth-watering fruits of the sea.

Weather permitting, alfresco fine dining on the Taverna’s panoramic terrace is also an option. The Ensesa family commissioned a restoration project headed up by interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, who was careful to preserve the Noucentista design nuances of the original building, furnishing the space with striking azure blue ikat patterned chair cushions, set against ice white tablecloths topped by elegantly illustrated sea creature emblazoned crockery. The whitewashed walls are adorned with striking vintage posters by graphic artist Enric Moneny, who art directed the stylish lifestyle magazine ‘S’Agaro’ back in the 1940s. Taverna del Mar has built a phenomenal reputation for crafting contemporary reinterpretations of classic Catalan dishes and is, above all, a first-class seafood destination. Guests can dine à la carte or choose freshly caught fish brought to their table for close inspection, at one of the best restaurants on the Costa Brava.

Unsurprisingly white wines reign supreme here, with vinous offerings representing all four corners of the country – with everything from Galician Godello from Bierzo to Riojan Viura to pair alongside the freshest mariscos.
