The Hotel is located between two of the most alluring beaches along the Costa Brava, Sant Pol and Sa Conca, which can only be accessed by hotel guests and local residents by car. During the summer season, a parade of colourful bathing huts are available for hire on Sant Pol beach, based on the original design from the 1920s, lending a touch of yesteryear glamour to the bordering sand dunes. It is also possible to rent sunbeds and parasols on both beaches.

S’Agaró has a proud history of hosting tennis tournaments – from 1935-1958 the Concurso Internacional de Tenis took place here and became a regular fixture on the sporting calendar, contested sixteen times in total. It attracted top players of the time like Pere Masip, Andres Gimeno and Manuel Santana, all of whom trod the terracotta-coloured clay courts at La Gavina. It also staged the Galea Trophy, a pre-cursor of the Davis Cup as well as attracting the legendary Rod Laver, whose wristy, heavy topspin style graced the Copa de Europa from 1962-65 before the competition moved to Sitges. Two magnificent clay courts which capture the grandeur of a bygone sporting era, remain at La Gavina Sports Club alongside two Padel tennis courts, accessed through a dedicated set of stairs directly above the hotel’s garden.

Meanwhile, La Roca Village, the designer outlet centre is a 45-minute drive from the hotel.

One of the top attractions of the Costa Brava, this stunning coastal path, fringed by fragrant Tamarind trees and gnarly pines, begins in S’Agaró and is easily accessible to guests of Hostal de la Gavina. Originally built by Josep Ensesa i Gubert, it was the first section of this popular promenade, which traces the entire rugged coastline of the Costa Brava, to be completed. Popular with walkers and runners, it’s marked by a succession of tiny coves and plunging gorges. The path affords unparalleled sea views of some of the most beautiful spots of the Costa Brava, including Senya Blanca and onwards towards Palamós, as it snakes its way into the distance.

Cycling is a popular activity on the Costa Brava. La Gavina can arrange the hire of all manner of different mountain and road bikes depending upon guests’ requirements. The Hotel has designed 3 recommended scenic cycle routes in the area, of varying difficulties, for guests to engage in:

Coastline tour – taking in the stunning scenery between Tossa de Mar and S’Agaró.
Inland tour – navigate through the Empordà region alongside the fields of Torrent with panoramic views of the Mongri mountain and the medieval village of Pals.
Clos d’Agon E-Wine tour – one of Empordà’s leading vineyards offers electric bicycle rides through the stunning natural environment of “Les Gavarres”, part of the Catalan Coastal Range, culminating in a wine tasting at its Cubist-style winery.

Top attractions of the Costa Brava, the most rugged part of Catalonia, range from delightful medieval towns such as Pals and Peratallada to typical seaside villages like Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués. The capital of the region, Girona, also deserves special attention

Catalan cuisine ranks among some of the finest in the world, with Ferran Adria´s El Bulli, a now-shuttered restaurant in a small bay near Roses, just up the coast from Hostal de la Gavina, at the root of it all. The fact that 69 Michelin stars were recently awarded to Catalan restaurants bears testimony to this.

There are several fine vineyards in close proximity to Hostal de la Gavina, including Clos d’Agon and Castell De Perelada who happily receive guests for bespoke tours and tastings of their local Empordà D.O. wine, which thrives on the influence of the Tramontana wind.

Golfers are spoilt for choice in the neighbouring vicinity, with two fantastic 18-hole golf courses situated a mere 10 minutes away from the Hotel: Club de Golf Costa Brava in Cristina d’Aro and Club Golf d’Aro – Mas Nou in Platja d’Aro. Both locations pride themselves on their spectacular views. Camiral, a Quinta do Lago Resort, near Girona, is Spain’s leading golf resort and will host the 2031 Ryder Cup. It is just a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

The Catalan sub-region of Empordà has always been a magnet for artists – a renowned enclave which gave birth to homegrown talents like Salvador Dalí, the master of surrealism and his contemporaries Angel Planells, Joan Massanet and Evarist Vallès. But it is revered in equal measure by writers, filmstars and creatives from as far afield as Hollywood. Offering a host of things to do on the Costa Brava, cultural highlights include The Dalí Triangle: linking a trilogy of unmissable attractions: Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the Gala Dalí Castle Museum in Púbol and the Salvador Dalí House Museum in Portlligat; its regional capital Girona and Museu de la Pesca (Fishing Museum) based in a former warehouse named Tinglado in Palamós.
