Candlelight

Accessed via a narrow marble staircase leading to the basement, Candlelight is La Gavina’s premium restaurant in S’Agaró and the place every foodie should reserve a table at for sublime fine dining on the Costa Brava. It opened to considerable acclaim way back in 1960 with waiters bedecked in red tailcoats, delivering plates of roast pheasant to discerning diners. The restaurant inspired the hotel to embrace new challenges, such as flying its chefs to London to give food masterclasses, almost unheard of back in 1976. It underwent a major refit in 2016 under the auspices of Gastronomic Director Romain Fornell, a Michelin-starred chef hailing from Toulouse, famous for becoming the only Frenchman to receive the honour in both his native France and Spain. While the restaurant continues to operate under his name, Fornell has stepped back to allow rising star Oriol Fernández more of the limelight, so far with great success: the young Catalan chef now oversees the day-to-day service at Candlelight where he continues to forge the restaurant’s reputation as one of the best restaurants on the Costa Brava. It is recognised for reinterpreting classic dishes alongside its own contemporary creations which fuse tradition with cutting-edge technology.

With a vast cellar of over 200 wines, Head Sommelier Florian David, makes the job of food and wine pairing an art form. He’s devised arguably the best wine list in Barcelona with the aim of offering diners an experience truly representative of the local terroir but also with exquisite French wines from his homeland, which, when paired with international dishes, evoke the spirit and history of the restaurant. In the warmer summer months guests have the option to dine on the restaurant’s intimate and romantic terrace, accompanied by live piano music each night.

Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 20:30. Smart casual dress code is required.
